Uganda’s First Female MP Alice Lubega Dies at 104

Uganda’s First Female Member of Parliament, Florence Alice Lubega has passed away at the age of 104. She passed away just a week to her 105th birthday.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among broke the news on her Twitter handle. She eulogised her as an inspirational legislator who mentored many.

“Hon Florence Alice Lubega as the first female legislator inspired the rest of us to take up the mantle of leadership.We celebrate her mentorship, inspiration and Courage that opened barriers for woman leaders.May the lord grant her eternal rest,” Anita Among tweeted.

Lubega was born on November 5, 1917 to former Buganda premier Samuel Wamala and Erina Nantongo. She went through Gayaza Girls’ School, Buloba Teachers’ College and was the first female to be admitted to Makerere College School before joining Oxford University.
She joined parliament in 1962.

Government Chief Whip, Thomas Tayebwa paid tribute to Lubega for opening doors to female legislators.

“Rest in Peace Uganda’s First Female Member of Parliament Hon Florence Alice Lubega. Born on 5 November 1917 – Died 28 October 2021, she joined parliament in 1962. U opened the gates for female legislators not only in Uganda but across the continent,” Tayebwa posted.
