New Equipment Brings Safer Births to Namayingo

Expectant mothers in Namayingo District will soon give birth in better-equipped wards thanks to a fresh delivery of modern medical gear donated by the United Nations Population Fund and the Embassy of Iceland. The kit—including delivery beds, newborn warmers, and fistula-repair instruments—has been handed to Buyinza Health Centre IV and several nearby clinics, all of which serve more than 300,000 people.

The timing matters: deliveries at Buyinza have nearly doubled—from about 90 a month to as many as 180—yet space and beds have not kept pace. Teenage pregnancies remain high too, though recent projects have trimmed the rate from 26 percent to 22 percent. Doctors say the new tools will ease overcrowding, speed up emergency care, and allow more fistula surgeries for girls and young women.

Health officials now want to match the equipment with better roads, more ambulances, and steady community outreach so no mother waits too long for help. “This is more than a hand-over,” one official said. “It’s a step toward dignity and safe delivery for every woman in this district.”
