Ugandan Minister Shot Dead by Bodyguard

The Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Col. (Rtd) Charles Engola Mac-Odwogo Okello has been shot dead by his bodyguard.

Engola, who was Oyam County North Member of Parliament, was reportedly shot by his own UPDF bodyguard at his home in Kyanja. According to police reports, the UPDF officer after shooting his boss also shot himself dead.

During Tuesday’s plenary sitting, Speaker Anita Among broke the sad news to the MPs.

“I have received disheartening information that one of our own from the frontbench, Hon Engola Macodwogo has been shot dead by his UPDF bodyguard and after shooting the minister he also shot himself,” Among said.

“So we have lost one of our own; it is not an easy moment but we can’t do much. That is God’s plan; he gives and takes and we can’t stop working because it has happened, we have these bills to pass.”

Before his appointment as the Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Engola Macodwogo served as the Minister of State for Defence. While in the military, Engola was the commander of UPDF 501 Brigade, headquartered at Opit, in Gulu.
