Tolbert Onyango Named New Head Coach of Heathens RFC

Heathens RFC have officially appointed Tolbert Onyango as their new head coach, marking a fresh chapter for the Kyadondo-based rugby giants following the departure of long-serving tactician Muhammad Athiyo.

The announcement, made on Thursday, confirmed earlier speculation linking Onyango—currently Uganda’s National Rugby 7s coach—to the top job at the club. Known for his strategic mind and deep ties to Kyadondo, Onyango brings with him years of experience, including time at the helm of the Toyota Buffaloes.

His immediate task will be to defend the national 7s title, which Heathens reclaimed last year after a 12-year drought. For Onyango, who has steered the Uganda 7s team to three Rugby Africa titles and several international appearances, the challenge is familiar ground.

Questions now turn to the composition of his technical team. While Heathens RFC has indicated the full coaching staff will be announced soon, some familiar names are already surfacing. Allan Otim is tipped to return as strength and conditioning coach, while Emmanuel Katuntu is expected to continue working with the backs.

For now, the new coaching unit will work with the current squad until the end of the Rugby 7s season. Any new signings are likely to come ahead of the Uganda Cup—should the tournament proceed. The Heathens have made their move. Now, all eyes are on Onyango to lead the Yellow Machine back to sustained glory.
